The Guardian reported that Emma Richardson, known to many as a musician, is now presenting her work as a painter in a show titled Hotwire My Heart. The exhibition features large, vivid oil paintings that Richardson describes as exploring ecstasy, desire and the wider range of human feeling. Richardson told the Guardian she enjoys listening to visitors as they study her canvases and offer their own interpretations of what they see. She compared those reactions to psychological tests in which viewers project their own meanings onto ambiguous images. Her imagery moves between cosmic and bodily themes, suggesting nebulae, deities, explosions, implosions and orgiastic scenes, with Richardson indicating that multiple readings can coexist. The Guardian reported that her interest in transcendence has been shaped in part by her musical career. Before her current role, Richardson played in the garage-rock trio Band of Skulls. She joined the Pixies in 2024, where she plays bass and sings. As Hotwire My Heart opens, she has been discussing subjects including terror, awe and teabags.
