The Guardian reported that poet Grace Nichols has been named the winner of the 2026 Royal Society of Literature Pioneer prize. According to the Guardian, the £10,000 award is given to women writers over 60 who achieved breakthroughs when the literary world was less open to them. Nichols, 76, was born in Guyana and settled in the UK in 1977. The Guardian reported she first gained recognition for I Is a Long-Memoried Woman, which received the Commonwealth poetry prize in 1983, followed the next year by The Fat Black Woman's Poems. Her work has appeared as GCSE set texts for decades, and she has produced writing for both children and adults.
