Patricia Langa appeared as Conchita in a basement room at Instituto Cervantes in central London, the Guardian reported. The character, a professional mourner, drew loosely on the sorrowful heroines of Federico García Lorca's 1936 play, The House of Bernarda Alba. During the performance, Langa told her imagined audience that Lorca's voice had been too loud, too queer and too alive for people around him who were filled with jealousy and hatred, and that they therefore silenced him. The Guardian reported that the significance of the poet and playwright's homosexuality was repressed in Spain for decades. It said a recent spate of work, including the film La Bola Negra, is redressing the balance for a new generation, and Spain's national poet has finally become a gay icon.
