The Guardian reported that Herbert Blomstedt, the Swedish-American conductor, has died at the age of 99. He was best known for his work with the San Francisco Symphony and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. His time on the podium lasted seven decades, and he was still conducting and touring in his late 90s, with his last concert taking place earlier this year when he was 98. Blomstedt was born in Massachusetts in the United States in July 1927 to Swedish parents. He spent his childhood in Sweden and Finland. Among those who taught him conducting were Igor Markevitch, Jean Morel and Leonard Bernstein.
