The Guardian reported that BT has cut close to 8,000 positions since March ended, as part of a broad drive to reduce costs throughout the company. The telecoms group said the number of employees fell by 7,731, bringing the total to 90,000. That figure does not count staff working in its overseas operations. Those overseas operations are being separated into a joint venture involving Verizon, the American telecommunications firm. Two years earlier, BT's overall workforce, counting contractors as well as employees, stood at roughly 130,000. For the six months through the end of September, BT recorded pre-tax profit of £1.1bn, and its share price reached its highest level in five years.
