The Guardian reported that Thailand's datacentre sector experienced strong momentum at the start of 2026. Its board of investment had approved projects from TikTok, UAE-based Skyline and Singapore's Bridge, with combined planned spending reaching $27bn. That expansion has since slowed, according to the Guardian. In September 2026, Thailand suspended building work on 49 projects and deferred decisions on a further 117, following concerns that rules for oversight and monitoring lacked sufficient detail. Indonesia has also taken steps to reconsider projects. The governor of West Java, the country's most populous province, stopped work on a datacentre because permits were missing and its environmental review had not been completed. The Guardian reported that constraints on electricity and water are now putting pressure on a sector that had appeared to be growing rapidly only months earlier.
