The Guardian reported that the UN refugee agency has criticised a UK government proposal under which refugees would face a wait of as long as 30 years before being allowed to settle permanently. According to the Guardian, the UNHCR said the plan raises significant concerns. The proposals were put forward earlier this week by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The Guardian reported that Mahmood presented the strategy alongside a softening of some elements of her immigration plans. She nevertheless retained strict measures for people arriving in small boats, keeping rules prepared by her department last year.
