The Straits Times reported on Nov. 6 that a former Macau lawmaker has been given a prison term of 12.5 years. The outlet said the sentence was handed down on Friday in connection with subversion charges against the man, who was described as a leading democrat in the city. The Straits Times noted that the case was the first known national security trial to take place in Macau, the China-ruled gambling hub.
