According to the Times of India, Sachin Tendulkar has lauded Joe Root's batting talent, saying he recognised the English player's promise when he first appeared in a Test in 2012. Tendulkar made the remarks as Root closes in on the all-time Test run tally held by the former India star. Root has already moved ahead of Tendulkar in the number of Test half-centuries. The Times of India also reported that Tendulkar named Root and Steve Smith among his preferred non-Indian batters. Separately, Tendulkar suggested changes to the structure of one-day international cricket aimed at creating a fairer contest between bat and ball.
