According to the Times of India, Udhaya Shankar first began sharing traditional kolam designs, but his work gradually turned toward protecting Tamil inscriptions. His project, Udhayam.in, now allows people to search more than 8,500 ancient texts online at no cost. Shankar continues the effort alongside his work as a designer, giving it about six hours each day. The Times of India described the project as driven by his dedication to Tamil heritage, despite the financial difficulties he has faced.
