NASA has released a global map of Mars highlighting 13 potential source regions for Teghaza 001, an exceptionally ancient Martian meteorite discovered on Earth, according to the space agency. The meteorite, classified as one of the oldest known samples from the Red Planet, carries chemical and mineralogical signatures that scientists have matched to specific terrains in the southern highlands, NASA said. While the exact launch site can never be confirmed, the map narrows the search to areas with similar geological characteristics. Researchers hope that identifying these candidate regions will help future missions target sites that could reveal more about Mars' early history, including the planet's volcanic activity and potential for ancient habitability, the agency noted.
