Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has disclosed that he began stockpiling food and water weeks ago in preparation for a potential national emergency, according to the Guardian.

The cabinet minister made the revelation while emphasising the growing threats facing the United Kingdom and confirming that his department has already started increasing its spending in response.

The Guardian reported that Streeting's comments came after Chancellor John Healey outlined ambitious targets for defence expenditure, aiming to reach 3% of GDP by 2030 and 3.5% by 2035.

To help fund this expansion, Healey has reportedly asked Whitehall departments to identify 1% budget cuts for long-term investment redirection.

Streeting stressed that value for money and modernisation would be central to the spending strategy as the government prepares to "fight the wars ahead."
