NASA said four volunteers have completed a yearlong simulated Mars mission, stepping outside together for the first time since the simulated journey began on Oct. 31, 2026. The Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, or CHAPEA, mission concluded its surface simulation at the agency's Johnson Space Center. The crew consisted of Matthew Montgomery, James Spicer, Ross Elder and Ellen Ellis, who lived and worked inside the confined habitat as part of research into human health and performance during extended spaceflight.
