Venice is famously a floating city, yet new research shows its foundations once lay far inland. According to the Guardian, experts uncovered evidence that dramatic sea level fluctuations over 10,000 years reshaped the northern Adriatic coastline, submerging ancient hills and swamps that previously supported human life. Samuele Ongaro, from the University of Southampton, led a study combining seismic data with sedimentary cores from coastal basins across northern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. The researchers used this data to model historical sea level changes and reconstruct past landscapes. Their findings confirm that much of the land ancestors inhabited is now lying beneath the waves.
