King Charles addressed Commonwealth leaders in Antigua, describing Britain's involvement in the slave trade as shameful but without issuing an apology, the Guardian reported. The remarks came in a speech marking the formal opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The Guardian reported that Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch was asked whether the UK should reconsider its Commonwealth membership in light of continued requests from other countries for slavery reparations. She rejected that suggestion, saying most Commonwealth countries were not pursuing such claims.

Badenoch also argued that an apology would weaken Britain, pointing to China as a country that had done many things without apologising. She suggested that appearing weak would encourage further demands that would ultimately be paid for by British taxpayers.
