The Guardian reported that the Court of Appeal has rejected an argument put forward by the Home Office over whether abduction for payment counts as exploitation under trafficking rules. The case concerned a Syrian man who was seized in Libya, with the department having argued that kidnapping for ransom should not be treated as exploitation of trafficking victims.
Following the decision, people who were previously ruled out on that basis will need to have their cases assessed again. If recognised, they could qualify for the assistance and recovery support available to trafficking victims.
